Who do you think you are?

Hello, my name's Lucy Fletcher. I've always known about my family history but I can never remember it very clearly, so I started by asking my parents things about the history in my family interview. I then sent my aunt and uncle an email asking if they had any info or pictures. After gathering information from those, I put together a family tree with as many names as I could get. Although these were good resources, I made a Prezi to explain it all in a neater fashion. I didn't get to the piktochart, but I made a five frame storyboard.

The guy seemed to be knowing what he was talking about, and for some people it was correct. I'll admit I'm on my phone a lot but I'm not sure I would ask someone for directions or something without it. And technology has connected many people and created relationships across the globe. I have friends in Australia, some in Canada, Minnesota, New York, California, and Washington. I've connected with my friends from England and Oklahoma on Facebook, but without technology I couldn't have done that. Although it harms some people (attention spans, patience, work ethics), it helps people too. I agree with what the guy was saying, but people seem to only focus on the negative effects of technology when there are plenty of positive things it's done too.

Read THIS blog post by a teacher. I mean actually read it. Take it in. Think about it. And then, write about it. What do you think about it? What is the teacher trying to say? In your own words explain what "the main event" is.

I think it's great, telling people not to give up just because of some troubles. Even if the troubles are bad, like someone in your family getting extremely sick, or depression, maybe relationship problems. I think "the main event" is just to keep trying and not give up, no matter how hard things get.

Blog Post of the Day: Reflect on your stop-motion animation project. How did it go? What worked? What didn't work? If you're not finished - why? If you are finished go in to detail about the project and what you learned. Give as much detail and information as possible.

The project went well, although it was tedious to go back and forth between the camera and puzzle. The tripod I had was a bit too wiggly so all the photos weren't from the same angle, which can be somewhat painful to watch constant jerky motions. My dad told me I shouldn't have used the flash on the camera, but I tried it later and it worked better than the lights. I tried too late, however, and didn't use the flash so the puzzle has glare. I learned I really should test things out before I just jump into things and take my time, using breaks so I don't start rushing. Also that I should leave these things with more time, because I ended up panicking and doing it last minute, which made it a lot worse than I wanted.

Blog Post of the Day: What is your idea for your stop-motion animation? Explain yourself. Have you started taking photos? If not, when do you plan to take your photos? What is your action plan for today? What is your plan to GET SOMETHING DONE?

My idea is to do a puzzle on a board and take a picture every time I put one or two pieces together/down. I took about half the photos last night, planning to take the rest either today or tomorrow. I'm going to combine what I have now to see what it looks like, if I want to redo it or something.

Blog Post of the Day: What is stop motion animation? If you don't know, look it up! Explain.

Stop motion animation is where you move things slightly and take a picture of it then combine those pictures into a movie, like Wallace and Gromit, to make the immobile objects seem like they're moving.

Blog Post of the Day: What is a storyboard? If you don't know, what do you think it is? How are storyboards used? What are some different ways that storyboards can be made?

I think a storyboard is the outline of a story, like for a movie or something. They just show a rough sequence of the story. Like making a television show, writing a book; things like that.

Blog Post of the Day: Did you get your pictures taken yesterday? Did you enjoy going on the photo scavenger hunt? Why do you think I had you take those types of pictures?

Yes, we got all of the pictures taken, I think. It was alright, nothing spectacular. To make them cool or something.

Blog Post of the Day: What do you know about photography? When you take pictures what kind of camera do you use? Do you use your cell phone? Do you own a digital camera that is not your cell phone? Explain.

My parents and I usually go to the zoo or a park with my dad's professional camera and I take pictures of animals, cool-looking places, stuff like that. I sometimes use my phone's camera if I don't have his camera. We have a few smaller digital cameras but none of them as nice as my dad's.

Presentation on Deforestation

Monday, March 24th

Blog Post of the Day: Welcome back! How was your Spring Break? Tell me all about it. You've been out of school for 10 days so I know you will have plenty to share. Make it good!

I stayed home for break and played video games with my friends, most of the time. I saw the movies Divergent, Frozen, and Ender's Game. All were very good movies, I think Divergent was my favorite. My brother's girlfriend came round for a few days in the middle of break, that was nice.

Infographic

Wednesday, March 5th

Prepare yourself... I want you to really THINK about this blog post. I mean really use your brain. What is the significance of an infographic? What is the point of pairing graphics and information together? What impact can this have on a reader or viewer. EXPLAIN.

The significance is to make the information easier and more interesting to read and to point out the bigger points about the topic. Also, there are people who are visual learners so having images to explain the topic would help them a lot. Infographics are also less likely to bore you and put you to sleep. It would make the reader/viewer more interested in the topic.

If you had the option of writing a 3 page paper or creating an infographic - which one would you choose? Explain yourself.

I would rather write a paper simply because I'm not extremely creative when it comes to graphic things.

How far along are you on your infographic? Will you be finished and ready to embed on to your blog by the end of the hour today? Do you think you've used your time wisely in class? Explain yourself.

I won't be finished by the end of the hour, no. I'm about 50% done, I think. I probably could have focused more while working.

Wednesday, February 26

Why do I have you brainstorm and collect your information in a Google Doc before putting in to final draft? Explain.

It makes putting the information together a lot easier and faster, giving us more time to work on quality instead of spending time finding facts.

Tuesday, February 25

Yesterday I introduced you to infographics... tell me again what they are and how they are used? What is the benefit of an infographic? What goes into an infographic?

Also, go out and see if you can find an already existing infographic on your global issue. Save the image to your computer and upload the image into your blog post for today. Save the source link to the image so that you can site the image in your blog post. See my examples at the end of this post.

Infographics are basically information in the form of a visual. They show information in an interesting way, usually using statistics and facts.

Post your research paper to your blog. Give me a short (one paragraph summary) of your paper and include the link for me read your paper. Make sure you link up words! Do NOT copy and paste the ugly link. This should not be foreign to you.

My global issue paper was about deforestation. Some causes for deforestation are logging, agriculture, and natural factors. Deforestation has effects on the biodiversity of a forest, climate change, and environmental issues. A couple of programs have  been made to try and diminish deforestation, such as Global Forest and Trade Network and the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation.

Where are you at with your 5 paragraph essay so far? How is it coming? Is it easy to write? Difficult to write? Is it helpful that you created an outline first? Explain.

I'm 2 and a half paragraphs in to my paper. It's easy enough, considering all the information is in my sources. It's a lot more helpful with the outline because the specific info I need is all right there.

Tell me about your Sweetheart weekend. If you didn't go to Sweetheart, what did you do? I want details!

I didn't go to sweetheart, instead I went to a friend's house and we played video games for a while. Then on Sunday I went to a friend's to "watch" the Superbowl. We just played League of Legends and watched some of the commercials.

Tell me about the global issue you selected yesterday. Briefly restate your paragraph from yesterday.

I chose the topic of deforestation because it isn’t a widely known issue when it really should be. I know it affects the diversity of animals and plants that thrive in those habitats. It also contributes to global warming and wildfires. I hope to learn the specific effects of deforestation on animal and plant loss, global warming, and people’s health.

If you could pick one issue in the world to fix or change what would it be and why?

I would fix deforestation or animal abuse. Deforestation because there are tons of animals not yet discovered that have gone extinct due to loss of habitat. Animal abuse because the animals didn't exactly do anything wrong to deserve it.

What is a Public Service Announcement? If you don't know what it is, Google it. In your own words, now tell me what it is? What are they used for? Can you recall an example of a PSA you've seen before?

A public service announcement is a thing to make people aware of something. I think back in middle school we had people come in and show us drug or alcohol abuse presentations.

Tell me about your three day weekend. How was it? What did you do? Elaborate!

It was okay, busier than usual, but still fun. I went out shopping with my brothers for my parents' anniversary present, played league of legends with some friends, walked my dogs with my dad and my brother Thomas, saw The Nut Job with some friends, and watched Oz with Thomas.

What have you learned about Google Drive and Google Presentation so far? What do you like about it? What problems have you run in to? Is it better than PowerPoint? Explain.

It's pretty much powerpoint but slightly less advanced and easier to access. I like the accessibility and how easy it is to use once you've figured it out. Other than the pictures, it's good. I prefer it over powerpoint simply because it has the necessities to make a presentation and you don't have to install anything. I had trouble with the pictures being moved to the slides, but that was just about the only issue I encountered.

Tell me if you agree with this statement and then explain why or why not. "Images on the internet are 'free game' - if someone posted I should be able to use it."

I think it's fine if it's for a profile picture on skype and you don't put some credit because it might be kind of silly to cite that. But if it's for a project or you're putting the picture on a blog thing without credit of some sort (a link at least), then it would be wrong.

What do you want to learn in the class the semester? What information do you want to walk away with that you didn't know before? Elaborate!

I want to learn what all the stuff in an HTML means and how I can change it. I want to leave with the ability to edit those and not mess everything up.
